Ocean Kayaks

Over the years, the sport of kayaking has evolved into one great outdoor activity that many adventurous individuals have come to love. And for the past few years, the boundaries of kayaking have expanded, bringing the kayaks from the whitewaters to the sea. Now, sea kayaking is among one of the most popular outdoor activities.

Sea kayaks are considered great seafaring crafts that are designed for the open water and the coast; you can paddle them even through the roughest and most extreme weather conditions. On the other hand, you can also use paddle in a very quiet manner that doesn't even disturb birds and wildlife. Typically, sea kayaks are longer and narrower than recreational kayaks.

Sport Kayak

Though sea kayaks are not as maneuverable as most whitewater kayaks, they have enough volume and speed to allow you to cover large distances with ample camping gear. Basically, this type of kayak is usually longer than fifteen feet and measures twenty to twenty-six inches wide. Its cockpit is generally small to large, depending on the specifications you want. They have spray skirts and optional rudders and dry and spacious storage.

Ocean Kayaks

Just hearing or reading about sea kayaking may induce your desire to try out the sport. But there are different things that you should take into consideration before trying a sea kayak, especially safety. You must learn all the basic and essential aspects of sea kayaking.

Make sure that everything in your kayak floats; this is in case you roll. If you're bringing gear and equipment that do not float, you can put them on a container that floats. You also want to have everything waterproofed, since some areas will let water in as your kayak and you roll. You should also always wear a personal floatation device; wear one that makes you feel comfortable and has pockets to hold your personal and important items. You may also want to consider other safety devices that are essential in sea kayaking.

Now, if you're looking for a set of sea kayaks and other sea kayaking gear, maybe to replace an old one or because you're just starting to buy things for your first kayaking experience, you may use the Internet for finding one that suits you best. There are many sites that offer information about the right sea kayak specifications to fit your needs. Try to compare as many sites as possible to find one that fits even the smallest budgets.

Wooden Fishing Boats - From Traditional Marsh Pirogues To Wide-Bottomed Drift Boats

So you've inherited that somewhat dubious old wooden fishing boat from your grandpa! You're feeling proud to be the one to carry on the family fishing tradition, but you're also experiencing just a little trepidation at the though of setting out on the wide open expanses of the lake this spring on a boat that has clearly seen better days...

Well, if your newly acquired old wooden fishing boat is looking a little worse for wear, you might do well to remember that wooden boat owners generally accept the fact these kind of boats were not built to last forever.

Sport Kayak

In fact, some were probably built with the intention that they would be replaced within five or ten years, and not kept going lovingly for decades by well-intentioned descendents of the original owner.

Wooden Fishing Boats - From Traditional Marsh Pirogues To Wide-Bottomed Drift Boats

Constant maintenance is probably the key concept here, and you will need to do some serious checking out of the boat's structure before setting out to haul in those prize catches.

Of course, nowadays - with newer wood-based, penetrating epoxy - dry rot has become much less of a problem, but you will still have to keep up the work to keep your boat in shape for the fishing waters.

Apart from the gleaming, grand old dames of yesteryear, contemporary wooden fishing boats are still being built, and you may be surprised at the workmanship and variety available.

You may want to have a look at the beautifully crafted boats such as wide-bottomed drift boats, or the graceful curves of a special viking-type rowing-and-fishing boat.

Some wooden fishing boat builders specialize in traditional Louisiana marsh pirogues and rowing skiffs, and for these you will even be able to find building plans should you be tempted to make a project out of it!

If you just want to have the experience of fishing from a wooden boat on your next fishing trip, you can head out to Ontario, where some fishing resorts have a special wooden fishing boat supplier building them to order.

These beautiful spacious, quiet boats are hand built out of cedar and oak, and equipped with swivel seats, a fishfinder, and all the necessary emergency equipment to make your trip an unforgettable experience.

Back to that old lady grandpa used for his outings on the lake: It may be well worth remembering the saying: "Nothing works on an old boat but the owner"...

Cheap Kayaks - Kayaks Under $200

Cheap kayaks can give you a lot of enjoyment. They can also stand up well to fair wear and tear.

Originally kayaks were timber framed covered with animal hide. This basic shape persisted for many years with the main changes veering towards a more streamlined look with different types of material being used to stretch over the wooden or aluminum frame.

Gradually though, more innovative designs crept in and with the growth of technology spurred by the introduction of synthetic material, a much broader spectrum of possibilities suddenly opened up for kayak manufacturers.

Cheap Kayaks - Kayaks Under 0

Why are some kayaks cheaper than others today? The answer is that price is almost consistently related to the material from which they are made. The materials used to make most modern kayaks fall broadly into those constructed from:

PVC (polyvinyl chloride). It is cheap, durable and easy to work with. It came onto the market in 1926 after Mr. B.F. Goodwin, a physician and industrialist who began a tire and rubber manufacturing company worked with a Mr. W. Semon, a well known American inventor. Together they found a way to 'bend' rigid PVC. This was done by combining it with different additives. PVC can be economically rotomoulded. (Rotomoulding works a little like those fairground rides where you are whizzed around in a rotating drum, starting at the bottom you find yourself rising up and sticking to the sides - only when the kayak is made, the rotomould is heated first).

Polymer is a material which is made from either natural or synthetic substances. (Rubber is a natural polymer) A synthetic example is polyethylene, a mix of ethylene - from sulphuric acid and alcohol, and monomer - a glucose derivate. These are all more commonly known as plastics.

Fibreglass (Extruded fibres of glass) as the name suggests, began to be used commercially from 1936. Often today, the method would involve layers of cloth fibres which would be strengthened by saturating them with plastic resins - called composite material. These boats are lighter than the plastic varieties.

Nylon fabrics around 1000 denier (consider that ladies sheer stockings are around 8 denier).

Hypalon (chlorosulfonated polyethylene) - a common name for all kinds of synthetic rubber, noted for its resistance to chemicals, temperature extremes and ultraviolet light.

Kevlor (a registered trademark) is a light, strong synthetic fibre made from aramids which themselves are heat resistant synthetic fibres. Bullet proof vests are made from this type of material. It is often quoted that Kevlor is "5 times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis". Synthetic fibres have their origins in the chemical industry. Most of them are a by-product of the process which changes crude oil into gasoline and other related products.

The outcome of all this is that cheap kayaks today are made from PVC and its derivatives.

Consider this. The Sevylor Tahiti Classic kayak has been down the Amazon River, which has class V rapids, twice. That is a distance of more than 6186 miles. The kayak is made from PVC which has been modified to make it suitable for the rough and tough of kayak paddling. This journey is a first class achievement for the humble PVC.

Sevylor, Sea Eagle, Advanced Elements, KwikTek/Airhead and Intex all make kayaks under 0. All of them are inflatables and most of them use PVC or related material.

Why Fish Bite - The Major Reasons That Fish Bite Or Don't Bite

In this article I'm going to discuss the major reasons why fish tend to bite or not bite. I'm going to leave out the obvious answers to this question and focus on some very simple (yet easy to implement) rules that determine why fish bite so that you can experience more success while fishing. Without getting overcomplicated, there are some major reasons why fish bite, that many anglers simply aren't aware of.

Henry David Thoreau once said, "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after." This quote is incredibly poignant and true, and at the same time we as anglers should always be doing our best to refine our craft. A great way of refining our craft is by learning why fish bite, so that we can be more successful anglers.

The first reason why fish bite or don't bite is the phase that the moon is in. What do I mean by the phase of the moon? I'm sure that you've heard of a full moon. Well a full moon is a phase of the moon. There are also two quarters, the waxing and waning crescents, and a new moon. Fish react differently during every phase of the moon. I realize that this might sound strange, but it's nonetheless true. The moon has a big impact on whether or not fish bite.

Why Fish Bite - The Major Reasons That Fish Bite Or Don't Bite

There are anglers who take this concept very seriously, and there are all kinds of software programs and books about the moon and fishing. In my experience the basics are all that are needed, and getting really involved in the moon and fishing isn't necessary. A simple rule is to make sure that you go fishing during a new moon (if you can), because fish tend to bite much better.

Another reason why fish bite or don't bite is the weather. The weather has I big impact on whether or not fish will bite. Actually more than the weather, the barometer impacts whether or not fish will bite. Knowing what to look for in regards to the weather and fishing will help you determine why fish bite. Again, some anglers take this very seriously, but in my experience the basics will do.

Your goal as an angler should be to be on the water fishing when both of these factors are in your favor. When this happens you will have one of those epic days fishing where it seems like you can do no wrong. Like no matter what you throw into the water results in fish being caught. When these great days happen it's normally because both the weather and moon are in the anglers favor.

Wiring Trolling Motor Batteries in Series Or Parallel

Battery-powered accessories on a boat often operate on something other than a 12-volt power source. For example, trolling motors often require either 24 or 36 volts. Most readily available batteries do not usually come in those voltages; so you can connect two or more in a series in order to double or triple your voltage while maintaining the same capacity rating (Amp Hours).

A major consideration during this process is battery chemistry, don't use two different chemistries when connecting in series or parallel. Make sure the voltages are the same, but more importantly the charge rates and capacities are the same to help prolong battery life.

First off, make sure of what you have, you don't want to feed 36 volts to a 12 volt trolling motor! Once you have determined that you indeed have a 36 volt trolling motor you then need to make sure you have room in the battery compartment for three full size marine batteries. Also, it is wise to go the extra yards and make sure you have either boxes or mounting brackets for all three batteries. You don't want these power sources flipping all over the hull while you are hitting waves!

Wiring Trolling Motor Batteries in Series Or Parallel

Wiring In Series

You will first need to make two jumper wires, approximately 2 feet long. You can obtain the necessary components at any automotive supply store or boat dealer. Once you have these completed you are ready to make the series connection. To make it a little simpler and keep it straight, give the batteries a number designation, such as #1, #2, and #3. It does not matter which number is assigned to which battery as this is done so that the rest of the instructions are easy to understand.

Arrange the power units in the battery compartment of your boat so that their opposite terminals are next to one another. The negative terminal of #1 should be next to the positive terminal of #2, and the negative terminal of the #2 should be next to the positive terminal of #3.

Connect your first jumper wire between the negative terminal of the first battery and the positive terminal of the second battery. Connect your second jumper wire between the negative terminal of the second battery and the positive terminal of the third battery. Fasten the positive lead from the trolling motor to the positive terminal on the first battery. Fasten the negative lead from the trolling motor to the negative terminal on the third battery.

Your series is now complete and you have a full 36 volts of power to your trolling motor. For a 24 volt system, you simply leave out the third battery and connect the negative lead from the trolling motor to the negative terminal of the second battery.

Wiring in Parallel

This method may be useful when you need to double your charge capacity instead of your voltage. In this case, you need your 12 volt charge to endure a longer period of trolling before you discharge completely. This method is called wiring in parallel and is very simple.

You Fasten the positive lead from the trolling motor to the positive terminal on the first battery; and the negative lead from the trolling motor to the negative terminal on the same battery. You then connect a jumper wire from the positive terminal of the first battery to the positive terminal of the second battery; the second jumper wire connects the negative terminal of the first battery to the negative terminal of the second battery. This doubles your capacity of 12 volts to power your trolling motor and twice the run time!
